Editorial Services

Please visit my new website for current information. Thank you!

I consider my offered editing services as the “stepping stone” between finishing a manuscript and perfecting it. I provide a thorough edit to help you move forward in the writing and publishing process.

I’ve been through the hunt for professional feedback many times and I’ve watched the prices for full manuscript edits climb with every passing year. I’ve been involved in critique groups that can only take you so far. Because of my understanding of the editing market and because of God’s blessings, I am able to keep my prices more affordable.

Please note: I only edit fiction manuscripts

My goal is to come along side you as a fellow writer to work together in perfecting your manuscript before you send it to a more sharp-eyed professional.

SERVICES:

Full Manuscript Substantive edit: $0.0035 per word.

“Substantive editing deals with the organization and presentation of existing content. It involves rephrasing for smoothness or to eliminate ambiguity, reorganizing or tightening, reducing or simplifying documentation, recasting tables, and other remedial activities.” (CMS [Chicago Manual of Style] Definition-2.55: Substantive editing [Note: also called content editing])

I am a set of fresh eyes with experience to spot patterns in your writing. This pricing is lower only for a full manuscript (minimum of 50,000 words). Pricing for smaller manuscript portions can be found below. A Full Manuscript Substantive Edit evaluates:

  • The strength of your story’s “hook” or beginning
  • The originality of your premise
  • How engaging your plot is
  • Your character development
  • The setting and how well I can picture it
  • Point-of-view
  • Showing vs. Telling
  • Conflict
  • Impact of spiritual focus (for Christian-based manuscripts)
  • Simple punctuation errors, spelling errors, and word misuse

Small Portion Substantive-Edit: $0.0070 per word

This is different from the Full Manuscript Substantive Edit because it allows you, the author, to choose how many words you would like edited. Often times, an edit of 10,000 words can provide enough insight to apply to one’s entire manuscript. The Small Portion Substantive Edit evaluates the same as the Full Manuscript, but is limited depending on the amount of the story edited:

  • The strength of your story’s “hook” or beginning
  • The originality of your premise
  • How engaging your plot is
  • Your character introductions and development (depending on length of portion edited)
  • The setting and how well I can picture it
  • Point-of-view
  • Showing vs. Telling
  • Conflict
  • Impact of spiritual focus (for Christian-based manuscripts)
  • Simple punctuation errors, spelling errors, and word misuse

First Chapter/Prologue Edit: $50 for 7,000 words or less.

A first chapter is usually under 7,000 words. If yours is longer, please e-mail me and we can work out a solution. This editing option includes prologues under the same rules. A First Chapter/Prologue Edit is more thorough than if you just paid per word for your first chapter. I evaluate:

  • The opening hook
  • The introduction of characters
  • The flow of writing
  • The quality of writing
  • Strength of introduced premise
  • The overall draw (or lack of draw) to continue reading.
  • Introduced questions

I edit all manuscripts electronically using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes. Along with the edits and comments, I provide a 2-5 page overview of my perspective. This will include a thorough summary of pros and cons, areas of growth, weak points, and questions raised.

I offer a FREE edit of your first 5 pages (double spaced) to help you decide if my services are what you’re looking for.

Miscellaneous Term Papers: $20 for 5 pages or less*

Per personal request, I’ve added a service to edit middle- and high-school papers. This service is geared toward homeschooling parents who are looking for someone outside of their boundaries to give paper-writing feedback. The prices and type of services rest largely upon the type of paper and preferences of the parent. I do not offer this service for college papers.

My services evaluate:

  • The logical flow of the paper
  • The paper’s thesis, intro, transitional sentences, and conclusion
  • General grammar, spelling, and word errors
  • Run-on sentences
  • Organization of thoughts

All edits are made using Microsoft Word’s Track Changes.

*Please contact me via  e-mail  to discuss pricing. If you’re looking to have multiple papers reviewed over a set period of time, I’m happy to consider a flat, multi-paper fee.

**Miscellaneous Term Paper edits go through a different submission process than the Substantive or First Chapter edits. Please read below:

    • Author, Angie Brashear, was recently contracted with HopeSprings Books (an imprint under Chalfont House Publishing). Her website is http://angiebrashear.com/ and the release date of her novel is TBD.
Author Chana Keefer recently self-published her second novel, One Night with a Rock Star. Her website is http://thepassionfields.com/. Both her novels are available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble (though I only edited One Night with a Rock Star).
      Does this answer your question?
